Q: What are the differences between traditional therapy and creative arts therapy?

A: Traditional therapy primarily relies on verbal communication to express thoughts and emotions, which can be challenging for individuals facing difficulty articulating themselves, carrying unresolved trauma, or experiencing dissociation. Conversely, creative art therapy not only encompasses talk therapy but also offers an alternative avenue, enabling individuals to express themselves through art when necessary. This approach engages the creative and emotional faculties of the brain, facilitating exploration and communication of profound emotions and experiences that might be challenging to verbalize. Creative art therapy thus presents a distinct and effective method for individuals grappling with complex emotional struggles to discover healing and self-expression.

Q: Will the art therapist "interpret" my artwork?

A: Creative art therapists don't interpret your art because the meaning of the artwork is provided by the client. The therapist guides the client to find meaning in various creative art forms, such as drama, song writing, and dance movement. In a humanistic therapeutic approach, the client is the expert on their artwork, and the therapist's role is simply to facilitate explorations of your work rather than to analyze or interpret it.".

Q: Is creative arts training or experience required for creative arts therapy?

A: No, prior experience in creative arts is not necessary. Your creative arts therapist will help you engage in the creative process using various materials and props. All that's needed is your openness to experiment and explore.

Q: Do you talk during a creative arts therapy session?

A:Indeed, talking is also important in creative art therapy. While creative art therapy places a strong emphasis on non-verbal forms of expression, such as art, music, or movement, verbal communication is still a valuable component of the therapeutic process. Clients have the option to use both words and creative expressions to communicate their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. This combination of verbal and non-verbal methods provides clients with a more comprehensive and flexible approach to self-expression and exploration within the therapeutic context.
